Sofia City Court ruled on June 8 to allow trial procedures against the former head of Bulgaria's National Revenue Agency (NRA), Maria Murgina, who is charged on four counts.

Prosecutors indicted Murgina on two charges of criminal malfeasance, a charge of filing false data in declaration submitted with the National Audit Office, and a charge of forcing an official in a regional NRA office to resign.

Milena Tsolchovska, formerly an employee with NRA's department in Silistra, filed her own lawsuit demanding damages, which will be heard by the court at the same time.

The investigation of Murgina was launched in February 2009, after the State Agency for National Security (SANS) stripped her of her right to access classified information.

In the aftermath, Murgina was faced mounting accusations of siphoning off large amounts of value-added tax revenue as well as organising a political cover-up. She was also accused of allegedly exploited her position in power to provide an NRA official with falsified information, thus committing a breach of trust.

According to the court's schedule, a new hearing on the case was scheduled for June 9.
