Rehabilitation of the Hemus motorway resumes

Rehabilitation of the Hemus highway section between Shoumen and Nevsha has resumed, the private Bulgarian television channel bTV reported on June 7 2010.

The firm entrusted with the renovation work agreed to re-start construction after Bozhidar Yotov, head of the National Road Infrastructure Agency (NRIA), reassured the firm that 10 million of the 11 million leva owed to the company would be wired.

"Thanks to this personal commitment of Mr Yotov, many of our suppliers – to whom we owe a lot of money for materials – agreed to resume supplying us with material," Petya Stoyanova, the firm's economics director, told bTV.

The firm, not named in the report, is supposed to complete the 14km of overhaul by June 30. NRIA said that they would wire the money owed to the company "after experts make a thorough assessment of the quality of construction".

A major rehabilitation programme was launched ahead of the summer on highways and roads leading towards Black Sea resorts.

About 50km of the Hemus motorway between Varna and Shoumen are earmarked for renovation this summer. This particular section, according to Dnevnik daily, was said to be "the most decrepit of all".

The road linking Kaspichan and Nevna along the I7 road is also set to undergo a "major overhaul", the National Road Infrastructure Agency (NRIA) told Bulgarian media.

Additionally, major road sections and interchanges around Kranevo, Varna and Bourgas are to be repaired.

Repair works will be conducted along the I2 road, linking Bulgaria's riverside city of Rousse in the northeast with Varna, as well as the II73 road linking Shoumen and Karnobat. Finally, the II29 road between Varna and Dobrich, and then from Dobritch to General Toshevo, is also to be repaired, as well as the I9 road between Kavarna and Dourankoulak.

Great timing, just as the summer holiday season starts.
Best way to ensure that many especially Romanian holidaymakers will have a hard time reaching their destination and will turn elsewhere.
