Bulgaria has another four deserted villages, as of last year, according to the national register within the National Statistics Institute, as reported on June 7 2010.
In December 2009, there were 144 deserted villages in the country, whereas a year later there are now 148, in 14 different municipalities. The highest number of deserted villages can be found in Gabrovo region in northern Bulgaria where 61 villages have been completely abandoned. This is followed closely by the municipality of Veliko Turnovo, where 39 villages are deserted.
Around Sofia, there are currently six villages without a single permanent resident. The registrar also shows that there are currently 43 villages in Bulgaria that have only one permanent resident and 54 villages with two. There are more than 100 villages in Bulgaria that have less than five inhabitants in them.
As of December 2009, there were a total of 5302 settlements in Bulgaria, 255 of them towns or cities. The largest village in Bulgaria is Aidemir with a population of 6655, followed by Lozen, near Sofia, with 6128, and Kazichene with 5010 people. The smallest town in Bulgaria is Melnik, in Blagoevgrad municipality, where only 364 people reside permanently, the report said.
This has happened in all western countries. England went through it a long time ago. It's inevitable when you move from a subsistance economy with 10 kids in every family. The way the birth rate is going in many countries even the cities will soon face the same problem.
Rural depopulation has been happening since the end of communism, with the closure of village-based factories, resultant unemployment of the people sent (forced) to work there and their departure for work opportunities elsewhere. They weren't agricultural workers and the present government has no business trying to recreate a failed business model. The villages which will survive into the future are those which have, or can construct, some other incentive for people to live there - whether Bulgarians or foreigners ...
Reason for this is ! Neglect! The Policies! are not looking at Rural BG! That is Real BG! Everyone should work towards improvement of Rural BG! That is the heart of BG! The village have fed so many in the past can do even better now! So there should be evry effort to Revive agriculture and Rural tourism to bring life back!
This is what happens when a government is doing absolutely nothing for it's people. how long will it take for them to wake up and do something to keep the people from running away? How long before the total of people in Bulgaria will be less than six million? GOVERNMENT WAKE UP!!!
Code Red declared in Haskovo and Smolyan. Weather warning that situation will worsen. European Commission ready to help, while Bulgaria’s Cabinet is to vote help to people in Haskovo region.
People missing, houses damaged and more than 50 evacuated from the village of Bisser in southern Bulgaria as harsh weather crisis continues in the country.
Code Red weather warning declared in two districts on February 6, while nine others – including Sofia – are under a Code Orange warning. International train traffic disrupted.
The war against rural BG started in 1947 not in '89.
Government involvement and engineering destroyed our villages not "lack of care" or neglect.

I agree with you VRATSAMAN, actually we are at the planning stage for a rural self-sufficient development near VRATSA.

I would like to point out that June 2010 is not "a year later" than December 2009. Im just sayin...
