Greek police on the island of Crete have arrested a 34-year-old man on suspicion that he raped a 10-year-old Bulgarian girl, the Greek daily Kathimerini reported on June 1 2010.

The alleged attack occurred in the town of Rethymno. Police arrested the suspect, who has not been named, after the victim pointed him out to police. It is alleged that he forced his way into the girl’s home while her parents were at work, the report said.

The man's nationality is also not known. This is the latest sex-related offence involving Bulgarian nationals on the Greek island.

A week ago, Greek media revealed that a 15-year-old Bulgarian girl was forced to work as a prostitute on Crete.

Authorities in Iraklion detained the mother of the Bulgarian girl on May 25, who was allegedly made to work as a prostitute by her own family. In addition to her arrest, police also detained a 59-year-old man believed to have paid to have sex with the girl.

Police are looking for the girl’s father and the couple’s 26-year-old cousin. The cousin is believed to have encouraged the Bulgarian couple to move to Crete from Bulgaria.
