The district court in the Bulgarian town of Yambol sentenced two people accused of negligence that led to the death of 18 people on May 28 2009 in the Bakadjika area near Yambol.

The driver of the bus, Gospodin Gospodinov, and bus owner Slav Slavov, each received sentences of 13 years in jail after the court found them guilty on charges of negligence causing the death of more than one person.

Both were also sentenced to pay all court expenses on the case. Gospodinov's driving licence was revoked for the next 15 years.

Lawyers of the defendants, as well as relatives of the 18 victims, said they will appeal against the sentence in the legally allowed 15-day period.

Eyewitnesses of the May 28 accident said that the 20-year-old bus had sliced down the hill unable to stop, which suggested that it had some sort of technical malfunction. During the investigation the technical examination of the wreckage bus showed that the brakes had malfunctioned.

Probably the people testing the vehicles will never be punished because the share the profits with people checking on them. I once got my technical test for my car without even showing up. All a matter of knowing the right people and paying few lev extra. Btw. I'm not worried about the technical condition of my car because i hardly use it and it was maintained outside Bulgaria till i imported it.
