Tsvetan Lazhanski, executive manager of Bulgarian water bottler Devin, has been named Bulgaria's business person of the year for 2009.

Lazhanski was announced as the winner of the contest at a ceremony held in Sofia on April 21 2010.

He won against nine other finalists who had made it to the final round of the contest - the first ever of its kind. It was launched on January 30 2010 and is co-organised by Bulgarian-language Kapital weekly and private Nova Televisia broadcaster.

Overall, 60 managers and businessmen took part in the contest whose aim is to select a business person who will show that honest and successful businesses have a place in Bulgaria.

Owners and managers of companies with a minimum of five per cent Bulgarian capital were eligible to compete; this also included non-Bulgarians.

Candidates were evaluated on four criteria: business success, sustainability, corporate and social responsibility and personal qualities.

The company’s financial results form 60 per cent of the evaluation process while corporate and social responsibility and personal qualities had a 20 per cent share each in how the candidates’ final result was decided.

The winner was decided by a jury of seven: Levon Hampartzoumian, chief executive of UniCredit Bulbank, Petko Dimitrov, a partner at PriceWaterhouseCoopers Bulgaria, Darina Stoyanova, president of Henkel Bulgaria, Borislav Stefanov, deputy head of InvestBulgaria Agency, Magdalena Maleeva, former top 10 tennis player and founder of Gorichka green platform, Jacob Andersen, executive director of Nova Televisia and Galya Prokopieva, editor-in-chief of Kapital.

Devin is among the most popular and well-known Bulgarian brands. Devin AD was founded in 1992 as a limited liability company part-owned by the municipality of Devin (near Smolyan, in southern Bulgaria).

Devin's products include mineral water, spring water, carbonated and fruit-flavoured soft drinks, ice tea and energy drinks in plastic and glass packages.
