Cyprus tourism marks strong recovery, Greece suffers

The tourism sector in Cyprus was marking a sound recovery following a dip during the global economic downturn according statistical data, cited by Bulgarian daily Dnevnik, on April 15 2010.

Foreign tourist numbers showed a strong increase of 15 per cent in Match 2010 over the same month of 2009, or more than 103 000 to last year's 90 000, the report said. Germans held the lion's share with 20.1 per cent of the foreigners who visited the Mediterranean island, followed by British tourists with 5.7 per cent.

A "drastic" decline, however. continued to be seen among French and Dutch tourists, with 27.7 per cent and 19.8 per cent respectively. Local authorities hoped that some of that would be offset by a rise in domestic tourism in the summer of 2010.

Turkey, meanwhile, marked a 7.7 per cent increase in tourism in January 2010, but it had set itself an ambitious goal to attract 30 million tourists this year as opposed to 26 million the year before. Turkey will hope that this goal will be facilitated with Istanbul being picked the cultural capital of Europe for 2010.

In southeastern Europe, Greece remains the country which was hit the hardest by the global crunch. Its tourist sector has suffered extensively, and the reasons, according to local hotel owners, apart from the global crisis, were predominantly attributed to the numerous industrial strikes, its budget crisis, the austerity measures, and "Greece's deteriorating image in Europe".

In the first two months of the year, Greece saw a 10 per cent slump in tourist numbers, as opposed to the same period of last year.

The Parliament just gave the 20 million to Cyprus Airways knowing that there is a clear danger of closing the airline. The Cypriot Tax payer pays off once again incompetent political movements to save the as of those who vote for them in exchange of favors.

Peter, these are comments on tourism issues, not about your personal political beliefs expressed in a sentence and a half...keep them for your self or write an article about them justifying them!

Tiza, The northern part was a strange mixture of modernity, the extremely ancient and places where time has mostly stood still for the past few decades because of recent history. It was fascinating visiting ancient ruins, ghost towns and modern beach resorts all in one trip. I wouldn't like to live there, though as a holiday I had a great time.

I was talking about the southern greek part, the north is really just like turkey

Tiza, It depends which half of Cyprus, top or bottom, you visit? The northern half isn't expensive or over-developed from what I saw.

Cyprus - very expensive, overdeveloped, grotty british style food, very ugly fat women...

Greece is wrong but the Republic of Macedonia will take over the region and restore it's former glory

Anonymous ivan Fri, Apr 16 2010 11:16 CET

It will continue to slump until Greece improves its services and reduces its inflated prices
