Levels of unemployment in Bulgaria were down by about 4000 people in March 2010 as opposed to the previous month, according to preliminary information released by the Labour Agency, the press centre of the Labour and Social Policy Ministry said in a media statement on April 1 2010.

The decrease in the rate of unemployment was the first in 18 months, the report said.

Current unemployment is estimated at 10.14 per cent. About 375 000 people registered at job centres across the country in March, though it is likely that actual unemployment is higher.

Varna accounted for the sharpest decline in new levels of redundancies, with 1500 less than in February 2010. The lowest was in Haskovo, 280 people. Meanwhile, in the Plovdiv region, unemployment was largely unchanged.

The only region in Bulgaria which reported a rise in unemployment, of about 600 people, was Bourgas.

The official projection for the national unemployment level for 2010 is 11.4 per cent, but fears arising from the unravelling economic environment are that unemployment could be worse than first projected.

Trade unions say that nationwide unemployment is likely to reach 20 per cent, but even at the more 'optimistic' projection of 15 per cent, that would transpire into a slow and arduous economic recovery in the future, the Confederation of the Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria (CITUB) said, cited by BTA.
