Bulgaria's Defence Ministry has proposed reducing its administrative staff by a third to save money and make the ministry more efficient.

From the current 1432 personnel, 980 will remain. The proposal was scheduled to be discussed by Bulgaria's Cabinet on March 25 2010, Dnevnik said.

According to Finance Minister Simeon Dyankov, certain government institutions that had failed to carry out orders to reduce their staff by 15 per cent in 2009 were now facing pay cuts.

"If people have to be made redundant in the Agriculture Ministry, then so be it," Agriculture Minister Miroslav Naidenov said.

"We are looking for effective plans for optimisation, but people must be aware that our budget for 2010 has been slashed by 32 per cent," he said.

"The condition for optimisation is particularly important for the ministries through which the European funds are being used – that is one of the important conditions - optimal administrative effectiveness," Naidenov said.
