The ferry connection linking the Bulgarian town of Nikopol with the Romanian town of Turnu Magurele across the Danube River will be launched on March 19, Bulgarian national television reported.

Prime Minister Boiko Borissov and his Romanian counterpart Emil Boc will officially inaugurate the new ferryboat complex, the report said. The ceremony is scheduled for 3.30pm on the Bulgarian shore near Nikopol.

This is the narrowest point between the two countries along the river, and the trip will last between eight and 10 minutes, according to authorities.

This new link will add to the currently operational three ferry lines between Romania and Romania: Vidin – Calafat, Silistra- Kalarash and Oryahovo-Beket.  Another ferryboat is planned at Lom-Rastu.

There is only one bridge connection between the two countries at Rousse- Giurgiu. The second bridge, Danube Bridge 2, is currently being constructed at Vidin-Calafat .

Construction works for the latest ferry line were expected to finish by the end of September 2009 and the line was initially expected to be launched in October 2009.
