Brussels issues final warning to Bulgaria over sulphur trioxide emissions

The European Commission has sent a final warning letter to Bulgaria regarding its failure to control its sulphur trioxide emissions, Bulgarian media reported on March 18 2010.

The first warning from Brussels was sent in June 2009, in which the commission had outlined the parameters to which Bulgaria was obliged to adhere to. In the letter it said that a 2007 assessment had identified two areas in Bulgaria as problematic, one in the southwest and the other in the southeast, where sulphur trioxide emissions exceeded the norms.

The commission said, however, that little had been done since then, prompting the second and final warning.

Reportedly, the allowed quantities amount to 125 μg/m3 for every 24 hours, levels which cannot be exceeded more than three times annually, Dnevnik said.

If Bulgaria fails to act in light of this final warning, it faces having to appear in the European Court in Luxembourg.

And there is also a punitive procedure underway for issuing building permissions in environmentally protected areas!!

Just ask the Varna council they know all about it!!
