Hristo Stoichkov, the Bulgarian head coach of the South African club Mamelodi Sundowns, has submitted his letter of resignation, Bulgarian media reported on March 17 2010.
For the moment, however, it is uncertain if this resignation is with immediate effect.
Stoichkov's obligations to Mamelodi Sundowns expire at the end of June 2010. He had not received a proposal for a contract extension in the aftermath of the club's failure to secure the South African Premier Soccer League title, but the final straw was the Bulgarian's recent remarks towards South African football officials and the club's subsequent refusal to back the coach.
"The man has a contract with the club until end of June… I don't know if he wants to break the contract or what. We will be talking to him today to find out," Sundowns' spokesperson Alex Shakoane told South African media.
Stoichkov was facing possible heavy disciplinary action following his outbursts during the closing stages of the PSL championship.
The Bulgarian was charged with misconduct following "abusive and insulting language" aimed at the match commissioner after the league clash between Sundowns and Moroka Swallows on February 19.
The second charge against Stoichkov is for sliding his finger against his throat, indicating that he "would want to slit the match commissioner’s throat".
The first case against Stoichkov was postponed to March 15 because the Bulgarian wanted a Spanish interpreter at the hearing and his lawyers from Bulgaria and Switzerland present as well. The case has been postponed, however, citing health reasons.
The Super Cup – a special game between Poland champion Wisla Krakow and Polish Cup winner Legia Warsaw was to be the first football event scheduled to take place at the venue.
In 2012, the Giants are again the underdogs, after finishing the regular season with a 9-7 record and barely qualifying for the playoffs, compared with the Patriots' 13-3 record.
