Turkish naval corvette enters Greek waters and sails almost to Athens

A Turkish naval vessel crossed into Greek territorial waters, headed west and sailed almost to Athens, the daily Greek Ta Nea reported on March 16 2010.

The corvette reached cape Sounion on the Attica peninsula and the island of Kea, just south of Athens, before heading northeast into the Aegean sea and then proceeding towards the Dardanelles.

According to Ta Nea, this is the eleventh such case of violation of Turkish naval vessels since November 7 2009, and the sixth in 2010 alone. It has been described by Athens officials as a new form of provocation.

Greek air space is often violated by Turkish fighting jets. As recently as February10 2010, eight Turkish fighter jets violated Greek air space in the Aegean Sea.

In a previous violation, four F-16s and four Phantoms F-4s penetrated Greek airspace at the south-eastern island of Samos, a touching distance from mainland Turkey.

The incursion of Turkish frigates and corvettes in Greek seas, however, has taken the cat and mouse game to a completely different level. Another such brazen violation was the case on January 14 2009 when a Turkish frigate reached the Saronian gulf (Saronikos Kolpos) in Athens.

In the aftermath of this latest incident, the Greek defence ministry has informed the foreign ministry which is expected to file an official complaint to the Turkish government.

I recommend to all those posting about this issue to read the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea which defined the international interpretation of territorial waters. This was signed by 179 countries. Turkey, curiously, did not sign but interestingly they adopted the 12 mile limit of their territorial waters in the Black Sea and Mediterranean but refuse Greece the right to do so in the Aegean as guaranteed under the internationally recognized UN convention. Also, in accordance with this convention, military craft are allowed transit passage which mean they can pass through a state's territorial waters to [...]

Read the full comment go from one are of international waters to another. I don't think what the Turkish frigate was doing near Athens fits this definition. Sorry but Turkey does not have a legal leg to stand on in this issue. That's why they don't refer to the ICJ and do not sign the Law of the Sea convention.

The presumption here is that the waters cited in the article via Greek sources are Greek.

Turkish officials say that the unilateral extension of territorial waters by Greece is not accepted.

Aries, I wish neither you, nor I; neither your people, nor mine, neither your government, nor mine had any problems; but we do.

Maybe someday ahead you and I will have the chance to embrace our Ancient Greek, Spartan, Minoan, Macedonian, Persian, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman roots together; since we do have joint ancestry from all those passing civilizations. You are not exactly a Greek from Ancient Greece anymore, and I am not exactly a Turk from the times of the Hun Dynasty.

But until that day, you have your reasons, and [...]

I agree on the misinformation in the reporting.

This pseudo-news (with missing details) does not inform the reader according to whose or what law these so-called violations occur. I am guessing that the Turkish Navy likely did not pass within 6 miles of mainland Greece (the small Islands have no jurisdiction due to overlapping boundaries with Turkey and within the Aegean).

So basically this is violation according to Greece who kids itself with the prospect of having 12 miles.

I live in Michigan, and I claim 10K miles from my house which I legally own and claim this 10K radius [...]

Read the full comment as my territory (alright I'll be frank, I claim 5K miles in my name, and 5K miles for the mortgaging bank). Greece you are violating my territory.

I suppose chasing my grandma away from her land/home in Crete isn't enough for you people. You want the whole Aegean? Sorry, but I am not sorry.

Greece has no money to buy petrol for their airplains or navy. They are sitting ducks for Turkey, but had a lot of money to destroy the Macedonian farmland last year.No wonder why they cannot collect enough money in taxes. The fields near Lerin are no longer usable due to live ammunition used by the Greek army.

All planes military or civilian must submit flight plans to the FIR of the neighboring country
"allied of Not"
That is for the safetly of flights
thanks for asking.

Anonymous Jon Mills Tue, Mar 16 2010 20:42 CET

Considering they are both NATO members, I would be amazed if military vessels and aircraft did not cross each others territory.

Besides that, there is every right for any nations shipping, military or civilian to pass through or across territorial space on their lawful and non hostile business.

So, what's the purpose of violating territorial waters and airspace? It doesn't seem like a big deal if after numerous infractions the Greeks haven't even filed a formal complaint. What are the Turks doing anyway?

Airbase from Incirlik to Crete - You can have it!!!!! Aries, you sound just as nervous as all good Hellenes should be about Turkey. Have some honour and pay back your debts to the Germans and stop irritating everyone! Turkish boats can/will go wherever they want and I'm proud that they annoy Greece in doing so. Read it and weep! Feeding the fish - ohh should we be afraid of Papanikolis's ghost, or the EU who always bail you out?

What will the cash-strapped Hellenic navy do then ?

We watch and wait.....
