Great Ferrari and greater Alonso win F1 season opener in Bahrain

 Fernando Alonso

Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso from Spain with Ferrari won the first race of the Formula One 2010 season in Bahrain on March 14 2010.

Alonso started third after his teammate Felipe Massa and Germany's Sebastian Vettel with Red Bull, who won pole position. From minute one, however, Alonso bet on an aggressive attack against Massa and managed to win the second place right after the second bend.

By that time, Vettel had managed to win a good two-second lead on Alonso and four seconds on Massa. The three quickly formed the leading group of drivers, and up until lap 34 Vettel was in full control of the race, with Alonso and Massa chasing him. Red Bull mechanics' work in the pit stop also helped Vettel maintain his pace.

In lap 34, however, Vettel started losing power in his engine, which allowed both Ferraris to overtake him with ease. Lewis Hamiltton did the same a few laps later.

From then on, Alonso had no problems finishing his first race as a Ferrari driver, especially since his teammate Massa was advised not to pressure his engine too much in chasing Alonso.

Vettel struggled but succeeded in keeping his fourth place ahead of Mercedes' Nico Rosberg.

Rosberg’s teammate Michael Schumacher, who returned to the sport after three years' absence, maintained his sixth place throughout the entire race. Reigning champion Janson Button from McLaren came seventh.

Good win for Alonso and sad day for Vettel. But more importantly it can be ranked as one of the most boring F1's in the last 5 years. It would seem that all the rule changes and no-refueling just make it a procession after the first two or three corners. Drivers are just waiting for someone else to make a mistake or break something.

It may be good for some, but is poor television and not very entertaining - and that is what the sponsors pay money for.
