Moderate earthquake hits Greece on March 12

A moderate earthquake struck Greece on March 12 2010, registering 4.6 on the Richter scale, international media said.

According to the Athens seismological institute, the quake was detected in the southern part of the country. There are no reports of structural damage or injuries.

Reportedly, the jolt occurred at 3.53am, while the epicentre was triangulated at about 180 kilometres south of Athens, in the sea southeast of the Peloponnese.

Earthquakes are common in Greece and neighbouring Turkey, which are both riddled with numerous fault lines.

The strongest and most fatal earthquake in Greek's recent history, in 1999, measured 5.9 on the Richter scale, killing 143 people, injuring hundreds, and leaving thousands homeless.
