We shall stand by you, US president Obama tells Greek PM Papandreou

Greece's prime minister George Papandreou, right, with US president Barack Obama during a celebration of Greek Independence Day in the East Room of the White House in Washington, March 9 2010.

President Barack Obama has told visiting Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou the U.S. will work with Greece, which is struggling with massive debt. Both leaders spoke at a White House reception, hours after meeting in the Oval Office.

Prime Minister Papandreou said President Obama reacted positively to European proposals to crack down on currency speculation, which the Greek leader blamed for his country's debt crisis.

Mr. Obama did not directly mention the financial problems in Greece, but said the U.S. will stand by its ally.

"Now, like his father and his grandfather before him, the prime minister is leading Greece through challenging times," said President Obama. "But as I told him during our meeting in the Oval Office today, whether in good times or in bad times, the people of Greece will always have a friend and a partner in the United States of America."

Mr. Papandreou, speaking in English, said his country is taking extraordinary steps to fight its rampaging debt.

"I can assure you, Mr. President, as I can assure the Greek-American community, we are doing what it takes, with determination and credibility, to steer our economy on a new path, a viable path, for the future," said George Papandreou.

The Greek leader said his government is revamping its public administration, its health and education systems and its tax system, as well as cutting bureaucracy.

Shortly after his Socialist party took office in October, Mr. Papandreou revealed that Greece's budget deficit was far worse than the previous government had admitted.

The prime minister is visiting the U.S. and three other countries, seeking support for more favorable interest rates for loans.  Earlier in the day, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said the administration believes Greece's debt crisis should be solved by the European Union.

Later, at the reception, President Obama thanked Mr. Papandreou for his initiatives to extend security and stability in his region.

"Toward a just and final settlement in Cyprus, fully integrating the Balkans into Europe, and the prime minister's personal work to improve relations with Turkey," said Mr. Obama. "We thank you."

The president also acknowledged the administration's announcement that Greece has been added to a list of countries whose citizens do not need visas for tourist visits to the U.S.

"Greece's participation in the visa waiver program will strengthen security in both our countries," he said. "And whether it is to do business or to visit family and friends, it will now be easier for our Greek friends to visit the United States."

Prime Minister Papandreou also met Tuesday with U.S. lawmakers, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

It's a joke Aries, meant that it's not us progressing but the Greeks regressing, hence "catching up".
Balkan humor.

Valeri.
I perfectly know the potential of Bulgaria, though lagging behind in terms of social equity and infrastructure bulgaria is doing very well.the only thing that annoys me very much is the dictum "bulgaria does not owe a penny " but the pensions are in the level of a 100 to 500 leva per month and the anerage salary is 600 leva per month. All the young are fleeing the country and the priveledged in Boyanna and Dragalechi are avoiding mutatis
mutandis the Greeks their fiscal obligations.

Aries
as a Bulgarian, I feel for my formerly fellow Bulgarians over in Skopie, although it does makes it obvious that we in BG proper, could've had worse luck with history - like the new heirs of Al. The Great, still fighting 19th century demons of land and ethnicity..
Poor folks.

At least we are dealing with practical issues in our countries, mostly money and corruption related, the kind that you can make progress on.
BTW going back to Greece' situation - a friend mine in BG politics, made a [...]

The clue lies in the words "Greek-American Community" - these are the votes that Obama needs at the moment, given the problems he has with the healthcare Bill in the Senate.

O Skeptikos is right - look at the actual words, and do not extrapolate what lies between them without very good evidence to do so.

Currently Obama has worse problems on his plate with the Jewish-American lobby and the question of east Jerusalem house-building. And it really was a bit rude of him to leave Netanyahu on his own in the [...]

Peter,
are you saying that the Albanians in FYROM are NOT "ethnic Macedonians"?

I think you are mistaking - they too are "Macedonians" with the only difference that you are ethnic Slavs, and they are not.
Remember, Macedonia is a geographic term not a race...

The Odysseus BC,Republic of Macedonia is 75% Ethnic Macedonians and 25% Muslim Albanians,Turks etc. The question is;what rthnicity is Greece?.Well, let me educate you a bit who you are.The so-called "Greeks" have no ethnicity at all.The thing is, Greece is a mixture of different people like 66% Albanians, next are ethnic Macedonians,Turks,Vlahus,Roma and others.Read the following; In an Anthony Bourdain episod about Greece on the Travel Channel aired on March 25,2010 Mr. Bourdain asked his Tourist Guide "What is really a Greek"? Is it an ethnicity, who are the Greeks? The Tourist Guide response was: "It is not an ethnicity, it is [...]

Has anyone got the exact text of what Obama actually DID say ?

Some people on this site seem to be reading more into his words than were intended (at least by the State Department !)

Until we know his exact words - and the meaning that the State Department Press release gives to them - I think we should be cautious.

I agree with Odysseus.

Fyrom does have only themselves to blame.
They have been anti Greek claiming all sorts of nonsense to establish an identity for them selves.

The Government and people of FYROM went about their name issue the wrong way.
They should of had Greece on there side and not stealing the identity of Greece to make their own. In doing so they have destroyed all friendship.

In situations like this now that FYROM will soon be majority Muslim and Muslims controlling [...]

Read the full comment their economy , FYROM could of turned to Greece for support.

It will never happen now the damage has been done. Greece will not get involved with FYROM issues in the future.
FYROM will be on its own.

Most people of FYROM are Orthodox .
Fyrom should of been an Alie of its Orthodox neighbor Greece.
It will be a shame and pity to see another Christian country been engulfed by the Muslims.

Greece had 400 years of Ottoman Turkish rule.
Now it's FYROM turn for been so stupid.
President Obama is a President for all people.
As his nickname ( Obama the Greek GOD )

FYROM.Former Yugoslavia Republic of Muslims.

Yes as President of the United States Obama has stated.

Anonymous Otan teliossi i demokratsia Thu, Mar 11 2010 17:23 CET

Obama (no more that Bush) doesn't know where 'GreekLand' is - he probably thinks it's near Chicago someplace !

And he probably thinks that FYROM is a kind of barbecue for king-size burgers.

Grow up - Odysseus - the good ole US doesn't know where any part of Europeland is, except possibly Franceland and Ireland (because of the Irish Boston vote in the House of Representatives.)

OBAMA CALLED FYROM A MUSLIM STATE >

Obama asked the Greek Priminister Papandreou to help the Muslim countries of Balkans to enter the Euro Atlantic institutions.

Obama nicknamed " The Greek GOD "

President Obama states that,

1. Albania

2. Kosovo

3. Bosnia

4. FYROM

by 2050 will all be a Muslim province in the Balkans.

Well what can i say ? [...]

The government and people of FYROM have only themselves to blame .
It is already happening as Fyrom has sided with Turkey allowing Turkish Muslim influence, into it's country and the building of the airport in Skopje by the Turks.

As on the other side of the border Albania is claiming territory on FYROM.
The Turks and Albanians in the near future will make a huge mess in FYROM.
Will you still call yourselves Macedonian ?
As the Muslims will change your identity again !
You will be forever fighting for an identity !

The government and people of FYROM chose to be against Greece.
When FYROM eventually is concurred by Muslims as they are already starting to move in on your tiny country,
Skopje will ask Athens for political and military help.
Help that Athens will reject.

Greece will witness the destruction of FYROM.
The destruction that the government and people of FYROM have brought amongst them selves and them selves only to blame.

This will not only be a victory for Athens...
But a victory for GREECE !

FYROM - Former Yugoslav Republic Of Muslims.
