European Commission backs Borissov's plan for minister on EU funds

The European Commission supports the creation of a minister without portfolio responsible for European Union funds, Bulgarian-language Standart daily quoted Prime Minister Boiko Borissov as saying on March 8 2010.

When Borissov first announced his plan for a new Cabinet post on March 5 2010, he said he would first consult the EC as to whether the new position would hamper the absorption of EU funds by imposing additional administrative burdens.

"We don't want to slow things down and make a mistake. That's why I will talk to EC experts first and then make the move," Borissov said on March 5 2010.

He has now told Standart that the EC supports the idea. The EC asked the new minister to report on the progress of every EU-funded project, on tender procedures and on the co-ordination between municipalities and central government.

Borissov has said that he would invite Tomislav Donchev, who won the elections for mayor of the central Bulgarian town of Gabrovo on Borissov's party ticket, to take the post if approved by the EC.

So far there has been no official reaction from Donchev. As of March 5 2010 Borissov said he had not yet spoken to him.
