The Times: Berbatov was class for Manchester United

The Times of London was full of praise for Bulgarian striker and national team captain Dimitar Berbatov after United dispatched Wolverhampton on their own turf, propelling the Red Devils back to the top of the Premiership on March.

United veteran Paul Scholes scored the winner over strugglers Wolves, who picked Nani's pass in the penalty area, turned past Christophe Berra and slotted the ball into the back of the net in the 74th minute.

Berbatov had an influential match just at the time when his team was hit by the news that Michael Owen’s injury problems will keep him out until the end of the season. Manager Alex Ferguson is not only concerned who will be paired successfully up front with Wayne Rooney, but also who will be up front should Rooney also get injured.

But according to the Times, "at Molineux on Saturday, Dimitar Berbatov offered Sir Alex Ferguson an answer".

As Rooney, the leading goalscorer, was missing because of a knee injury after being "killed by the Wembley pitch", and with Owen hamstrung, Ferguson was left with no alternative but to play Berbatov up front and lead the strike force.

And the Bulgarian did not disappoint and on "Saturday his class gradually shone through" the Times said. His latest United performance came just days after a listless Bulgaria was swept off the field in a friendly with Poland.

Against Wolves, the Bulgarian played in attack on his own, was at times sublime, at times rather ineffective, but overall, his class was on display. He created the first opening at Wolves' goal, but Ji-Sung Park wasted the opportunity.

I'll be happy when Barbidoll leaves the great club of Manchester United.

I'm from Bulgaria, and overall I am very proud of Berbatov, cuz he is the highest representative of Bulgaria of Bulgarian football on the world stage (not to be compared with Stoichkov, of course.)

He is class, that's for sure. The guy is talented and has a rare touch over the ball. BUT, the one thing that gets on my nerves is his style of play in terms of "running your ass off for the team". Even he himself has said "I don't run when I see no point in it." This leads to a "what [...]

Read the full comment if" scenario. the mind boggles at the thought - what if he ran as much as Rooney? It's the only part of his game that is, in my opinion, under par.

Berba is indeed a great player having a magical touch and delivering passes with great ease.He is the best in keeping the ball when required.

I also find it laughable that people say all he does is a fancy flick? Thats credit to him because he makes it look easy it actually isn't at all. I've watched drogba, gerrard and even rooney attempt the so called easy trick and they get the ball nowhere near their team mates.

@tc when has berbatov played as the primary striker twice this season??? rooney fluffs chances as well but he gets lots of them. Rooney is the best striker at man united thats a fact but you really need to understand what else berbatov brings to the team, rio ferdinand says he is vital and im pretty sure he knows more than us.

Berba does have some good touches on the ball in general, but as a expensive striker, surely he should be a little more capable.. the last few games he has played as a striker the chances he has missed have been pretty simple, and for a guy with such a good touch he should be taking alot more chances than he does.. I think he is trying to be too skillful all the time !! just smash it in the back of the net berba !!

Agreed, Berba's skill is underrated. I'd like to see him develop an attacking partnership with Rooney.

Can this be article be real? Almost every piece i have read has always attacked Berbatov. Yes, sometimes he does drift out of the game but most times he is the anchor in which almost all united attacks start from, and I am not talking about a 30 yard shot on goal. More of flicking or passing the ball between 2 defenders so Valencia or PJS have 10 yards of open space to cross the ball in. This is what he does, makes the hard tasks easy so easy so that other players have more ease in doing the simple [...]

Read the full comment things. He will always be critisied but I feel most pundits out there see him as 'not a Wayne Rooney' so he is not a good fwd. When in the bigger picture he is beyond vital.
