Bulgaria's Agriculture Minister Miroslav Naidenov will visit flooded areas near the towns of Elhovo and Bolyarovo in Yambol region, southeastern Bulgaria, on March 5, the Agriculture Ministry said in a statement on March 3.

Naidenov will meet with farmers from the region to discuss how the ministry will assess damages caused by flooding and compensation for local producers.

On March 7, Naidenov plans to meet with officials from the Association of Agricultural Producers in Bulgaria to discuss similar steps for farmers whose land along the Danube River has been flooded and prevention measures to prevent further flooding.

Earlier on March 3, the association asked for an urgent meeting with Naidenov to discuss compensation for farmers who lost their crops to floods.

More than 3000ha of wheat and rapeseed, as well as 600ha of forests were flooded in the Elhovo and Bolyarovo area. Should heavy rain continue throughout March, farmers would not be able to plant sunflower, Dnevnik daily quoted the association as saying.

In several municipalities along the Danube, including Svishtov, Nikopol, Belene and Tsenovo, more than 2000ha planted with wheat, barley and rapeseed were flooded, the association said.
