The Second Mechanised Company has received orders for full battle readiness and told to prepare for deployment in the rotating mission in Kabul, Afghanistan, as part of International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), the Bulgarian news agency (BTA) reported on March 2 2010.

The unit will be tasked with securing the external perimeter outside Kabul Airport, according to the company's commander, Colonel Dimitar Shivikov.

The replacement has come after the repatriation of Bulgarian troops belonging to the Sixth Regiment who returned to Bulgaria on February 8 2010.

In total, 260 Bulgarian solders out of the 600-strong contingent returned home at the time. The Sixth Regiment were entrusted with guarding the airport of Kandahar.

Meanwhile, the Bulgarian soldiers who were wounded in the missile attack in their base in Afghanistan - Junior Sergeant Alexander Alexandrov, Corporal Yordan Petkov and Private Yavor Ivanov - have been awarded the Military Valour Medal, Third Class, the Defence Ministry said in a statement.

The men were wounded when missiles exploded inside the perimeter of the base on January 24 2010. The incident happened just 300m from the lodgings of the former Bulgarian Defence Minister and current Foreign Minister, Nikolai Mladenov, who was visiting troops at the time.
