Blog: UK election manifesto

Is prime minister Gordon Brown heading for victory in the UK? The latest opinion polls show a meltdown in the Conservative lead

1. Abolish outdated degree system (2:1, 2:2, etc) that fails to distinguish between the mediocre and the talented and has become meaningless to employers. Replace it with a points system, e.g. history graduate 81 per cent, politics graduate 72 per cent.

2. Non-violent criminals to serve their time in the community on worthwhile projects and be monitored to ensure they do so. Increased sentences for violent offenders and an end to early release schemes. Victims to have greater say in sentencing. Immediate restoration of capital punishment for premeditated murder. Prominent sports personalities engaged to mentor young offenders. Curfews – of limited duration – to be introduced in areas where street crime is out of control. Parents of lawbreaking under-age offenders to be fined.

3. War on drunkenness. Increased prices for all alcohol. Irresponsible publicans to be fined for serving drunken customers. Spot checks introduced. Schools to have obligatory educational classes on dangers of alcoholism.

4. Increase in the level minimum wage and an end to endless welfare, compulsory vocational training for long-term welfare claimants. Absent fathers forced to pay for their children. The prospective 50 per cent income tax rate to be cancelled since it has been proven by economists to be pointless and self-defeating.

5. Compulsory elocution lessons for all schoolchildren and a return to proper English. By this I do not mean abolishing regional accents but, rather, emphasising correct English. Schools to have classes in which children have to make clear, cogent presentations on all kinds of subjects.

6. Emphasis on British history and British values in schools. An end to multiculturalism, by which I mean rallying new arrivals around a sense of Britishness. Expulsion of militant extremists who promote overthrow of traditional UK state and laws.

7. Restoration of bobbies on the beat and visible police patrols. The end of the ludicrous notion that a heavy police presence is in some way "provocative".

8. More monitoring of news organisations to ensure that a certain share of reporting is given over to "hard" news, not "personality" news. All bodies that are public service providers, such as the BBC and the civil service, forced to divulge precise wages to staff and be made more accountable to the public.

9. Inner city regeneration through making housing more affordable. Banks forced to re-appoint managers and re-establish personal link between the branch and the customer.

10. Abolish sensationalised drivel soap operas such as Eastenders and substitute with well-written single plays of the kind that the BBC used to produce before it catered to the kitchen sink.

get ready for UK hyperinflation, when a 500 ml bottle of beer cost 8 pounds or so....Gordo (like Adolf) doesn;t mind bringing the country down with him as long as he can cling to power...maybe he is Mugabe's long lost half brother?

Frankly, I found most of this manifesto terrifying and laying the groundwork for a police state.

Brown has put GB into debt beyond anything before. Sold gold at the lostest price etc. etc.. Whoever gets in most people will suffer, jobs will go etc. so stop immergration, except for those speciallist that may be required, get out of EU. lETS HAVE A BRITAIN OF WORKERS AGAIN NOT LAZY NO HOPERS!

I particularly like points 6 and 7. Blair and Brown have turned the once proud nation of Great Britain into a multicultural shithole!

All I can say is do you remember Maggie Thatcher, if so vote for Gordon.

Overall, not a bad idea, especially on (2). The general concept certainly needs some serious thought....

Yes, Paul, but perhaps the expats who have left won't bother to vote Brown out - they have voted with their feet instead

who in their right mind would vote for Gordon brown and the labour party. Wake up and look what he/they have done to Britain. That is why so many Brits have had enough and left the UK. Give someone else a chance at leading. they couldn't make the country any worse!!!!!
