The water level of the Danube River continues to rise but for the moment there is no immediate threat to the Bulgarian coastline, according to authorities in the northeastern city of Rousse, on the border with Romania.

The river is under constant surveillance. The levels have reached 568cm in the region and while some islands in the river have been flooded, the main coastline remains safe. When the water level reaches eight metres, or more, the situation becomes critical.

"The forecast for the next few days, even weeks, is for the river to continue to swell, gradually," Georgi Georgiev, from the agency of research and surveillance of the Danube River in Rousse was quoted as saying by the private Bulgarian television channel, bTV, on February 25 2010.

"With the amount of water coming from central Europe and the local subsidiaries here in Bulgaria, the river will continue to rise," he said.

The biggest worry for the authorities is the sudden - and unseasonable - warm front over Bulgaria. Should snow melt gradually, the river can accommodate the steady increase of capacity, but with rapid snow melting in process, the danger of the river spilling over is all too real.

So far, five islands on the river have been flooded. Broken trees and trunks littering the river are reported as dangerous for smaller ships and light vessels.
