Sotir Oushev has resigned from his post of head of the National Social Security Institute (NSSI), citing personal reasons, NSSI said on February 24 2010.

Media speculation had it that his move was connected to the investigation against former social minister Emilia Maslarova who, together with four others, was charged on February 23 2010 with embezzling 11 million leva during her term in office in 2005-2009. According to law, Oushev's resignation must be reviewed in Parliament because this is the body that appoints and dismisses NSSI's director.

Oushev was appointed head of NSSI in May 2009, less than three months ahead of the July 2009 elections for Parliament that ousted the then coalition government from power. Before that he was head of the state Employment Agency.

His appointment was one of many made by the previous ruling majority at the end of its term. This was highly criticised by the then opposition and its leader Boiko Borissov, later appointed Prime Minister.
