Pharmaceutical distributors in Bulgaria are to be investigated following allegations that some had been siphoning money from the state budget, Prime Minister Boiko Borissov said.

Borissov declined to identify those who had been the subject of allegations. He also declined to say whether public servants had been involved.

Health Minister Bozhidar Nanev said that the State Agency for National Security (SANS) was conducting a probe into tenders and at hospitals.

The Commission for Protection of Competition (CPC) has received allegations about cartels.

NGOs have submitted several complaints about alleged irregularities in tenders for expensive pharmaceuticals.

Former health minister Emil Rainov was checked by SANS after a tip-off by a major distributor but then resigned, with the investigation unit not saying whether it had found any wrongdoing.
