The level of the Danube River is expected to rise by one metre on the entire length of its stretch in Bulgaria, reaching over six metres, Bulgarian media reported.

As such, areas around Rousse as well as certain villages could be threatened by flooding.

In the northeastern city of Rousse, on the frontier with Romania, the water level overnight rose by 73cm. Authorities are expecting it to rise further still, reaching 106cm in total. In places around Rousse, the Danube will peak at over eight metres.

The last time this occurred, in 2006, a large part of the Rousse pier and docks were under water, Dnevnik daily said.

In the upper parts of the the Danube, in Germany, Hungary, Slovakia and Serbia, the water is also expected to rise but not at the same level as in Bulgaria and Romania.

Average temperatures for Bulgaria will range between 8 and 13C while in Sofia they will be about 8C, the Bulgarian meteorological service said on February 23 2010.

Rain is expected later on in western Bulgaria and in the mountains above 1500m it will snow.

Along the Black Sea coast, temperatures will be about 10C, accompanied by mild to moderate southerly winds and heavy cloud cover,  although rain is not expected, the report said.
