Heroin found in Bulgarian 'aid' truck bound for Haiti

An article on the Haiti Press Network reveals that Romanian authorities discovered a substantial haul of heroin hidden in a Bulgarian registered truck carrying aid for Haiti.

The article, entitled "Some Are Profiteering from Haiti’s Tragedy," focuses on the incident, which took place on February 20, in which Romanian authorities discovered "hundreds of kilograms" of heroin hidden in a Bulgarian registered truck carrying aid for Haiti.

Romanian TV station Realitatea reported that the driver of the truck claimed he was transporting humanitarian aid for the Haiti quake victims. But when they searched the truck, police officers found the heroin stashed in the vehicle's brake system. The driver, who said he was headed for Belgium, is currently in custody, and if found guilty of drug trafficking, could face up to 25 years in prison.

The incident may undermine trust in Bulgaria's help in alleviating the disaster after a promising beginning in which a telethon, aired at the first week of February on Bulgaria’s bTV, raised 943 524 leva towards earthquake relief.

The telethon featured Bulgarian actors, musicians, ambassadors, business people and politicians, and was carried out in co-operation with Unicef Bulgaria. Of the sum, 895 513 leva came in via a special SMS line and the rest into a dedicated bank account, bTV said.

The devastating earthquake, which struck the Caribbean island on January 12, killed more than 200 000 people, injured many others and left two million in need of aid.

I have to agree with Bob. This is one of the most underwhelming articles ever. What does this incident have to do with the Bulgarian celebrities?

What does this truck really have to do with Haiti? Was it driving cargo across the Atlantic, to a collection point? etc...

Who owned the truck?

Was the money raised by the telethon used to buy heroin for Haiti?

In addition to being under-researched, the article was not clear at all!

Who was driving the truck? Who was smuggling the heroin? Where did the shipment originate from? Was this a government convoy?
This should be titled "Haitian News Article mentions Bulgaria", because that's about the amount of research you did.

Hope for Haiti's Children to receive 1.6M leva in donations from Bulgaria

The children of the devastated island are among the hardest-hit, as 700 000 out of 1.26 million were directly affected by the quake, many of whom were left orphans.
