Serbian police arrest 50 in operation against financial crimes

Serbian police, working with tax police and prosecutors, arrested more than 50 suspects in several cities and towns on February 19 2010, in a move against crimes including money laundering, tax evasion and falsification of official documents.

Local media quoted Serbian interior minister Ivica Dacic as telling journalists in Belgrade that the operation was still continuing.

The operation was carried out in Belgrade, Valjevo, Novi Sad, Šabac, Sremska Mitrovica, Čačak and Sombor.

Those arrested included the director of a transport company, along with senior executives and employees of various companies.

In total, the various crimes in connection with which the arrests were made were estimated to have robbed Serbia’s economy of about two million euro.

Police reportedly were still seeking other suspects.
