An earthquake measuring 3.2 on the Richter scale jolted Ihtiman Municipality in Bulgaria at 6.37am on February 16 2010, Bulgarian media reported.

Ihtiman is near the Trakiya Motorway, close to halfway between Sofia and Plovdiv to the south-east of the capital.

The Seismologic Institute at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) said in a statement that "we would like to underline that Bulgaria is over an area prone to frequent seismic activity. This is a natural phenomenon here and there is no cause for alarm".

The quake caused no damage.
