Sofia’s Modern Theatre was the venue for an "Everything is Love" charity concert on February 14 2010 for the children of Haiti.

Broadcast live by its media partner Bulgarian National Television, the concert featured European Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva and a number of popular musicians and actors, including Miro, Donny and Neti, Free Will Society, Signal, Milena and Review, Nassekomix, Studio Dance Zone and the theatre's own stars Iskra Angelova, Stefaniya Koleva, Ivan Radoev, Ivan Burnev, Margarita Gosheva, Kristiana Yaneva and Yavor Baharov.

VIP guests included Foreign Minister Nikolai Mladenov, French ambassador Etienne de Poncins, and MEP Andrei Kovachev.

The performance was held to encourage people to send text messages to 1255, the number being used by the Bulgarian Red Cross to raise funds for Haiti, while proceeds from seats sold for the performance also are to be sent to Haiti.

In one of her first acts on taking office as European Commissioner for International Co-operation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, Georgieva asked the European Commission for an additional 90 million leva for Haiti.

The proposal was for the funds to be drawn from the EU budget’s emergency reserve fund a further substantial package of humanitarian aid in Haiti.

The European Commission said that the emphasis would be on making a significant contribution to the immense and urgent need for shelter for Haitians whose homes were destroyed or damaged in the earthquake as well as supporting distribution of food and the provision of much needed health care.

"We should avoid at all costs a second-wave humanitarian disaster in Haiti. With the approaching rainy and hurricane season, giving people a roof over their heads is a key priority" Georgieva said.

"And it needs to be a roof that can withstand the Caribbean storms. The experience of 2008, when the country was hammered by four tropical storms in succession, is very much in our minds. By mobilising a further 90 million euro, the European Commission shows that it is determined to support the efforts of the Haitian authorities in organising relief support for its people," she said.

In addition to supporting shelter activities, the decision would be used to meet continuing urgent needs in other sectors including food, health and water/sanitation.

This new funding will bring the EU's overall response in Haiti to 609 million euro, of which 309 million euro is humanitarian aid (120 million euro through the Commission and 189 million euro through the member states). The remaining 300 million euro is for urgent rehabilitation and reconstruction. Together with the upcoming EU military mission aiming to provide shelter this funding will further contribute to alleviating the suffering of the Haitian people.

Haitians observed a day of mourning on February 12 to mark one month since the devastating earthquake left much of the capital, Port-au-Prince, and surrounding areas in ruins, and more than 217 000 people dead.

The scale of the disaster is still becoming apparent, the United Nations aid chief said on February 12 as he emphasised that finding adequate shelter and sanitation remained the greatest challenges of the relief effort.

"The scale and impact of this disaster are still becoming clearer and clearer, and therefore the scale and the nature of the challenges we face – not only on the relief side, but also the course for the recovery and development later on," Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs John Holmes told reporters via teleconference from Port-au-Prince, the Haitian capital, the UN News Service said.

The same day, Unicef Bulgaria said that its Bulgarian Hope for Children in Haiti campaign had raised 1 579 799 leva by that date. The fund-raising campaign was launched on January 22 and a charity concert was held on February 2.
