Mamelodi Sundowns, the South African top division club led by Bulgarian football legend Hristo Stoichkov, are in contention to claim the South African title, or Absa Premiership, for the 2009/10 season.

Stoichkov's side are trailing league-topping SuperSport United by three points. United have 54 points from 27 matches, but Sundowns, nicknamed the Brazilians, are breathing down United's neck with 51 points and a match in hand.

Three matches remain until the end of the season in the league of 16, but Sundowns trail SuperSport in the key tie-breaker - goal difference.

Stoichkov has refused to get carried away by the prospect of winning the title.

"I am not even thinking of the championship," he was quoted as saying by South African Press Association. "We still have four matches to play and I concentrate on one match at a time."

"I will start thinking about Santos on Friday after the players have had a chance to recuperate and rest."

Sundowns maintained their charge up the table with an arduous 1-0 victory over Platinum Stars at the Super Stadium in Atteridgeville late on February 10 2010.

Sundowns substitute Surprise Moriri scored with 15 minutes remaining, earning the Brazilians a victory that kept the team in the hunt for the trophy as the final stretch of the title chase approaches.

The last time the club won the South African title was in the 2006/07 season. Last year, Sundowns finished in the lowly ninth position.

Stoichkov's charges take take on fifth-lace Santos at home on February 14. Their remaining fixtures will pit them against Moroka Swallows on February 17, followed by a trip to Jomo Cosmos on February 20 and closing the season at home to Golden Arrows on March 6.
