The road between Tsarevo and Sozopol is temporarily shut to traffic because of surging water, Bulgarian private television channel BTV reported on February 8 2010.

The Ropotamo River burst its banks as water levels rose dramatically with the intense snowfall over the past two days. The road will be re-opened once water levels decrease to their normal amount, the report says.

There is up to 90cm of new snow cover in the region between Kurdzhali and Assenovgrad, while near Adrino the snow measures more than 70cm, BTV said. Subsequently, about 27 settlements in the Kurdzhali Municipality have been left without electricity. Civil protection units are on site to repair the electric lines.

Schools are closed for classes in Dzhebel municiplaity, as well as Dolno Ezerovo, in Bourgas. One school was reportedly flooded by rain and a surge of water while the other suffered a power cut.

Most of Bulgaria is subjected to intense snowfall, but regions in the southwest and southeast have been feeling the effects of torrential rain which, according to the Bulgarian Meteorological Service, will progressively turn to snow as a cold front descends over the country in the late afternoon of February 8 and temperatures plummet further.
