Almost 130 000 voters picked the "Euro-leaf" design by German student Dusan Milenkovic in an online competition.

The Euro-leaf design shows the EU stars in the shape of a leaf against a green background.

The new logo will be mandatory on all pre-packaged organic foods produced in European Union member states and be optional for organic foods imported from outside the bloc. Amendments to the organic farming regulation that will introduce the new logo into legislation are expected to be approved within weeks.

The idea for the logo competition had been launched by Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development Mariann Fisher Boel, who said she was "delighted" with the new logo, describing it as an "elegant design" and saying she was "looking forward to buying products carrying this logo from July this year". According to Fisher Boel, the competition had "raised the profile of organic food".

The winning logo had been selected by users of the competition website www.ec.europe.eu/organic-logo from three shortlisted designs that had been picked from 3500 entries.

The winner, and the runners-up, will be honoured by the European Commission's Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development at an official award ceremony in Brussels in July. The three winners receive prizes of 6000, 3500 and 2500 euro respectively.

It seriously looks like female genitalia. 100% female genitalia. Star tattooed female genitalia. Fail on the symbolism there...
