Dimitar Abadjiev has left the centre-right Order, Law and Justice (OLJ) party of firebrand politician Yane Yanev, Bulgarian news agency BTA said on February 4 2010. The party has accepted Abadjiev's resignation, BTA quoted an OLJ statement as saying.

"We are convinced that Dimitar Abadjiev will continue following the principles of democracy and his right-wing ideas," the statement said, thanking Abadjiev for his work and legislative initiatives as an MP.

The party said that its door will always be wide open to Abadjiev should he decide to return to politics as a man such as Abadjiev will always be useful with his work and expertise.

In an interview with Bulgarian-language 24 Chassa daily, Abadjiev said that the his motives to leave the party were personal. "I don't think that I can be useful to the project (the OLJ) at this stage and I don't see any drama in this. I have spoken to Yanev two weeks ago about my resignation. We have always had a good dialogue and I hope we will have a normal relationship in the future," he said.

The reasons for his resignation had to do with his personal and professional and political priorities "to the extent that my role in the OLJ was to help it become part of the European Conservatives' project," Abadjiev said, referring to the European Conservatives and Reformists group in European Parliament.

Although OLJ failed to win seats in European Parliament, OLJ leader Yane Yanev has been warmly embraced by the UK Conservative Party leader, David Cameron. Abadjiev was one of the key factors in getting Cameron's support for Yanev in March 2009, when Abadjiev accompanied Yanev to London for a meeting with Cameron.

As for whether the OLJ still enjoyed the European Conservatives and Reformists' support, Abadajiev said that he could not speak in their name.

"My job was to get OLJ international support. Now that we failed to win seats in European Parliament this possibility is highly limited," he said. Abadjiev was top of OLJ ticket for the June 7 2009 MEPs elections but failed to win a seat.
