Bulgarian Oscar hopes go up in smoke

When the Oscar nominees for 2010 were announced on February 2 2010, Bulgarian hopes for a statuette went up in smoke.

The World Is Big and Salvation Lurks around the Corner by director Stefan Komandarev was shortlisted for Best Foreign Language Film award, but did not make the final nominations list.

The Bulgarian film was shortlisted with eight other films, selected from 65 entries.

The World Is Big has so far received more than a dozen different awards in and outside Bulgaria and has enjoyed keen interest among Bulgarian viewers since it was released in 2008. It is considered one of the best achievements of Bulgarian cinema in the past 20 years, which were dogged by a lack of financing and disinterest among audiences.

Nominated for the 2010 Best Foreign Language Film are Ajami (Israel), El Secreto de Sus Ojos (Argentina), The Milk of Sorrow (Peru), Un Prophète (France) and The White Ribbon (Germany).

The winner will be announced at the Oscar awards ceremony on March 7 2010.

Winner of the Best Foreign Language Film in 2009 was Japan's entry Departures by director Yojiro Takita.
