Parts of Bulgaria hard-hit by latest blizzard

Winter conditions in Bulgaria are reported as "heavy" while in some regions in the country they are "severe", Bulgarian National Television said on February 2 2010.

Around the riverside city of Rousse, roads are partially closed due to ice cover. Accordingly, hundreds of lorries are queueing to cross the bridge to Romania. Reportedly, the long line of lorries extends all the way from Dunav Most, all around Rousse, reaching the interchange leading for Sofia.

Lorries were stuck in snow drifts in the region of Dobrich, as 29 snow clearing machines were deployed all night in a race against time to clean the roads.

Three villages in Shoumen municipality are left without electricity as snow cover in the region exceeds 50cm. The roads in the region are also not fully cleared from the fresh snow.

According to the Bulgarian Meteorological Institute website, the skies over Bulgarian on February 2 will remain mostly clear. Average temperatures for the country will be between -5C and -9C with regions in northern Bulgarian reaching -12C or colder.

Mild to moderate westerly winds will prevail. Most mountains in Bulgaria will be sunny.

At least in Bulgaria they wait until they actually HAVE some snow before things start to grind to a halt.......a lesson to be learned for the UK, I'd say!
