Bulgarian film Eastern Plays, directed by Kamen Kalev, was awarded the Central European Initiative award on the closing day of the Trieste International Film Festival on January 28 2010.

The film, a Bulgarian - Swedish co-production, was given the award for "its ability to tell a meaningful and valuable story that is emblematic of problems associated with globalisation," a media statement from the Sofia International Film Festival said.

Eastern Plays is a film about two Bulgarian brothers, George and Itzo, and a Turkish woman Isil.

When, during a visit to Bulgaria, Isil's father is attacked by a group of skinheads, the two brothers play different roles in the events, which end up bringing the brothers closer to one another, and find Itzo and Isil attracted to each other.

Kalev's film debut has become a beloved film not only for Bulgarians because of its sincerity, the SIFF media statement said.

Eastern Plays is the Bulgarian film to take part in the International Competition at SIFF in March 2010.
