A Bulgarian team of military doctors and nurses who will work as part of a French medical team has arrived in Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince.

The team was ordered to Haiti by Prime Minister Boiko Borissov and Defence Minister Nikolai Mladenov.

The Military Medical Academy in Sofia said on January 24 2010 that the team had extensive experience, with each having participated in missions as part of Nato contingents in Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo.

More than one week after the earthquake in Haiti, patients' medical needs continue to strain resources, the Voice of America said on January 23.

Since the arrival of the US Navy hospital ship Comfort on Tuesday, medical staff have received more than 250 patients, performed more than 100 surgeries and evacuated two burn victims to Miami, Florida for treatment.

The United Nations said on January 23 that Haiti's government had called off the search and rescue mission in the earthquake stricken country.

The government's declaration came 10 days after the earthquake destroyed much of Port-au-Prince, as well as other towns and villages outside the city.

Celebrities lent their star power to help the people of Haiti in a telethon, Hope for Haiti Now, that was broadcast from Los Angeles, New York, London and Haiti.

The concert was seen by hundreds of millions of international viewers on cable and satellite channels, and the internet and on January 24 was reported to have raised about $57 million. Leonardo di Caprio donated $1 million and, the BBC said, many of the other stars donated money: Madonna gave $250 000, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie gave $1 million and supermodel Giselle Bundchen gave $1.5 million.

The United Nations News Service said on January 23 that the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) was delivering daily meals to about two million Haitians as it continued to ramp up operations in the cities and towns hardest hit by the earthquake.

WFP Executive Director Josette Sheeran, who was visiting Haiti, issued a statement on January 23 in which she said the agency would keep expanding its existing relief efforts through five established humanitarian corridors.
