Greek farmers have lifted the blockade of Bulgaria’s all of border crossings with Greece, Bulgarian news agency Focus said on January 22 2010.

According to Focus Greek farmers decided to end the blockade after meeting Bulgarian Prime Minister Boiko Borissov at Koulata – Promahon border crossing.

A Government media statement said that Borissov went to the site of the blockade in order to get acquainted with the situation which for the past five days has blocked Bulgaria’s main transport link to Greece, causing millions of leva in damages to Bulgaria’s economy.

According to Focus, Borissov arrived by helicopter. He told the Greek farmers about the inhuman conditions Bulgarian lorry drivers were living in while waiting in their trucks for the blockade to be lifted, and that Bulgarians were developing negative attitudes to Greek farmers.

The result was a promise by Greek farmers to lift the blockade, Focus said and noted that all of the eight lanes were opened for traffic.

On January 22 2010, the line of lorries waiting on the Bulgarian side of the border was more than five kilometers long, Focus said.

Earlier the same day, Greek prime minister George Papandreou  appealed to the "patriotism" of protesting farmers to pull out of roadblocks they have set up throughout the country and to join in a dialogue called by the government on the country's new agricultural policy, Greek ana.gr website said.

Papandreou said that the roadblocks were hurting Greece's image in the international economy, emphasising that "there is absolutely no margin for satisfying the demands that are put forward sporadically and unplanned".

Boiko, being a 'natural' politican whatever his original background, did exactly the right thing in actually visiting the site and speaking directly to those involved. I didn't read of Papandreou doing the same thing...

Meanwhile, thanks to Sasha for explaining why on earth the Macedonian government built that stupid statue of Aleksandr Veliki in the main square of Skopje...a dumb thing to do (and an expensive one) by any standards.

Was it really just to keep the Diaspora / Emigracja happy ?

It certainly wound up the Greeks, [...]

Read the full comment who admittedly need little provocation, as they seem to hate all their neighbours with a certain paranoia (good Greek word, that !)

If we had some good politicians like Boiko in Macedonia we'd find that our people would finally be on the road to prosperity. Gruevski and his clowns need to take a page out of Boiko's book and see how statesmen deal with diplomatic issues without having to build Greek statues in our public squares (skopje) just to appease the antiquisationist diaspora. Probably thats why so many Macedonians continue to praise their Bulgarian origin. Keep up the good work.
