A Bulgarian medical team left from Sofia Airport on January 22 2010 to join the humanitarian relief effort in Haiti.

The team is led by Colonel Alexander Parashkevov, deputy head of the military rapid response squad, and consists of two surgeons, one anaesthesiologist and two nurses.

The medics, being sent on the orders of Bulgarian Prime Minister Boiko Borissov and Defence Minister Nikolai Mladenov was given an official send-off by Deputy Foreign Minister Marin Raikov and French ambassador in Sofia Etienne de Poncins.

The team will be working at a French military field hospital set up in Haiti.

Raikov, who met newly-arrived US ambassador James Warlick shortly before the farewell ceremony for the medics, said that Bulgaria had a record of participation in humanitarian missions in various hotspots.

Raikov said that he was grateful for Bulgaria’s opportunity to work alongside France in the military field hospital.

De Poncins said that the Bulgarian medical team would travel to France and from Paris, directly to Haiti on a French military aircraft. He paid tribute to the good reputation of Bulgarian doctors.

The January 12 2010 in Haiti on 12 January claimed the lives of more than 100 000 people and left hundreds of thousands without shelter.
