MPs propose that Macedonia eases smoking ban in summer

On the eve of a nationwide protest in Macedonia against the country’s smoking ban, media in Skopje said that ruling party MPs were asking parliament to allow the ban to be eased during the summer months.

The ban came into effect on January 1 2010, and outlaws smoking anywhere at restaurants and other places of public entertainment.

Restaurateurs and other public establishments throughout Macedonia have said that they will close for a day on January 22 in protest against the law, which they say is costing them custom. There have also been allegations of selective application of the law.

The amendments being proposed by MPs for Macedonia’s ruling VMRO-DPMNE say that from March 1 until October 31, smoking may be allowed in open-air areas of places of entertainment, provided that these areas have no coverings that would make them closed spaces, according to media reports in Skopje on January 21.

Well, it's precisely what happens in the UK, after all : pub/bar and restaurant outdoor open-spaces (even under canvas umbrellas) are exempt from the smoking ban. Nobody seems too unhappy....
