CSKA Sofia became the first Bulgarian volleyball side to qualify for the CEV Champions League playoff stage after they beat Russian side Zenit Kazan in a dramatic encounter in Samokov, Bulgarian media reported on January 21 2001.

The Bulgarians are not foreign to European success, becoming European champions in the distant 1969 and winning the volleyball Cup Winners Cup seven years later.

The Bulgarian team overwhelmed the Russians (23-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-23) in what was their their third consecutive home win, Dnevnik said.

Zenit had already qualified for the later stages of the tournament and arrived for without four key players: Lloy Ball, Clayton Stanley, Sergey Tetyukhin and Alexsey Verbov. However, the visitors still managed to finish top of the group, with CSKA Sofia coming in second.

The best player on the day for the Bulgarians was Kenyan Philip Maiyo.

According to website sportal.bg, CSKA could draw the current reigning European champion Trentino, led by Bulgaria's best volleyball player Matei Kaziyski.
