New powerful earthquake hits devastated Haiti

In the midst of the operation to save the devastated island of Haiti a new powerful aftershock struck on January 20 2010, world media reported.

Reports tell of already crumbling buildings that were jolted and in some instances collapsed, while terrified people were sent screaming onto streets and open spaces seeking safety away from unstable and insecure structures.

The strongest aftershock since the devastating quake that hit on January 12 measures 6.1 on the Richter scale and hit the island at 3.15pm Bulgarian time, with the epicenter being triangulated at 56km northwest of the island's capital Port-au-Prince.

In the aftermath of last week's devastating quake, about 200 000 people in Haiti are believed to have died, while a further 250 000 are injured and 1.5 million left without home or shelter, according to the European Union Commission.

An enormous international aid effort has been hastily set up by dozens of countries worldwide but is struggling with overwhelming logistical problems due to the island's lack of infrastructure, creating potentially deadly bottlenecks.

According to various reports from international media and television broadcasts, international relief efforts have been disorganised, disjointed, incoherent and insufficient to satisfy survivors' needs.

The latest aftershock is only likely to have caused further destruction and grievance to an already devastated island.
