Zheleva’s resignation as Foreign Minister accepted – Tsvetanov

Foreign Minister Roumyana Zheleva’s resignation has been accepted, Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov said in an interview on Bulgarian National Television (BNT) on January 20 2010.

This is a reversal of the position from the previous day, when Zheleva wrote to Prime Minister Boiko Borissov asking to withdraw from all her posts.

After some initial confusion when the Government media office said that her resignation from all posts had been accepted, Borissov told a news conference on January 19 that he was accepting only that she withdraw as Bulgaria’s candidate European Commissioner.

He had no reason to accept her resignation as Foreign Minister, Borissov told the January 19 news conference.

Appearing on BNT's breakfast show on January 20, Tsvetanov, who is deputy leader of Bulgaria's ruling party GERB, said that Zheleva’s resignation from her Cabinet post had been accepted.

The decision had been made after a long and difficult discussion the previous day by the GERB parliamentary group.

It had not been decided who would replace Zheleva as Foreign Minister, Tsvetanov said.

After her bid to become a European Commissioner collapsed amid controversy, Zheleva was replaced as Bulgaria's candidate by World Bank vice president Kristalina Georgieva.
