After a spell of warm weather that lasted for more than a week while northern Europe was engulfed by freezing temperatures and unseen blizzards, winter will stage a comeback in Bulgaria, albeit hesitantly. Temperatures are expected to drop significantly compared to the preceding days, but will remain above the average for the season.

The weather system that has descended over the country will keep temperatures low, it will be predominantly cloudy and visibility will be poor, especially in the mountains, but there is no expected snow accumulation over the weekend. Snowfalls, if any, will be small and insignificant, the Bulgarian Meteorological Institute said on January 15 2010.

Prevailing winds will be eastward and mild to moderate, even in the mountains. Temperatures will drop down to -7C in places.

Sofia will see temperatures of about -1C to 4C on January 16.

The Black Sea coast will be subjected to clouds and moderate winds, but no precipitation. Average temperatures for the coast will range from 2C to 3C on January 16.

At 1200 m elevation, the temperatures will be around -4C and at 2000m - at -7C to -8C, the report says. Visibility will be poor, and conditions for mountaineering and skiing will not be ideal.

I called mountain rescue who said they don't speak English and put the phone down on me, as did the Bansko Tourist Information, the Razlog Hospital, and customer care at M-Tel.
