Bulgaria will join the international humanitarian task force and contribute help for the survivors of the catastrophic earthquake that struck Haiti.

Bulgarian Prime Minister Boiko Borissov ordered the Bulgarian Army to mobilise tents, sleeping bags, blankets and other items which will be flown to the Caribbean island, a Government media statement said on January 15 2010.

In spite of the economic crisis and the financial strain on the Bulgarian Defence Ministry, Borissov said that the country was determined to assist Haiti in the best way it could.

The Bulgarian disaster relief package amounting to 1.5 tonnes of kit is to be flown from the Papa air force base in Hungary.

The earthquake, which measured 7.0 on the Richter scale, centered about 16 km from the capital Port-au-Prince, Haiti, at 4:53pm local time on 12 January 2010 and was reportedly the strongest to hit the country for more than two centuries.

Official and rescue personnel fear that the death toll from the devastating quake could escalate to more than 100 000.

The Bulgarian Red Cross opened a bank account, calling on all Bulgarian institutions, companies and citizens to donate money for the survivors of Haiti.

The bank account details are: UniCredit Bulbank, IBAN BG 64 UNCR 7630 1078 6609 13, BIC-code UNCRBGSF.

Good job Bulgaria, a show of support. Those people need help and lots of it.

As a Bulgarian I'm a shame that my government and Bate Bojko can do so little for those in dire needs. What will happen if we Bulgaria will have one day this type of disaster? From my side I have send 5.000 Euro to those poor people. We ALL must help them.
