Sofia’s solar-powered snow removal system

Sir

As a socially responsible business owner and taxpayer, I must say that Sofia receives little recognition as a hotbed of green innovation, but let it remain a secret no longer. A case in point – the city’s pathbreaking solar-powered snow removal programme. Not only does restricted ploughing and sanding avert several tons of direct CO2 emissions each year, as well as salt-related environmental damage, the indirect knock-on effects are tremendous.

Think about all the averted carbon emissions from as little as three inches of snow as commuters avoid driving and flock to public transport instead. Thank goodness it runs smoothly on snowy days – a business-minded town like Sofia can’t afford to lose any productivity.

We can look forward also to tremendous social benefits as the money saved on carbon-intensive traditional snow removal is redeployed in social programmes and for infrastructure. Kudos to our city fathers for this innovative and enlightened approach to delivering public services.

Sincerely
Ken Lefkowitz
