Murder of Cypriot media boss Hadjicostis outrages colleagues

Condemnation of Andis Hadjicostis' murder and calls for the case to be resolved quickly and effectively have followed in the aftermath of the fatal shooting on January 11 in Nicosia, Cyprus.

The Vienna-based organisation of editors, media executives, owners of media and leading journalists from South East and Central Europe, known as (SEEMO), have spoken against the murder of Hadjicostis, CEO of the family-controlled Dias media group and Sigma TV.

The Cypriot media boss was gunned down outside his home in Nicosia's diplomatic neighbourhood of Engomi a little after 8pm on January 11 2010. The incident occurred near several embassies, including those of France, Russia, Egypt and the US.

"Our heartfelt condolences go out to Hadjicostis's family, friends and colleagues for their tragic loss," Oliver Vujovic, SEEMO Secretary General, was quoted as saying in a media statement on January 14 2010.

"It is important to find as soon as possible the person or persons responsible for this killing of a media owner. SEEMO asks the authorities of the Republic of Cyprus to do everything they can to solve the case," Vujovic said.

Hadjicostis was credited with the creation of the Sigma TV station, "as well as modernising the media empire of radio stations, newspapers and magazines" in Cyprus.
