Croatian president Mesic arrives in Kosovo on January 8

Croatian president Stjepan Mesic.

Croatian president Stjepan Mesic was due to arrive in Pristina on January 8 2010, a day later than initially planned to avoid offending Belgrade by visiting on the day that Serbian Orthodox Christians celebrate Christmas.

Already, relations between Serbia and Croatia are troubled because of Zagreb’s recognition of Kosovo as independent, which Belgrade rejects as illegitimate, and because of the rival allegations of genocide that Serbia and Croatia are trading in international court.

Croatia recognised Kosovo as independent just more than a month after the February 2008 unilateral declaration of independence in Pristina, and agreed in July that year to establish diplomatic relations.

When the International Court of Justice heard oral evidence in December 2009 on the question of the legality of Kosovo's independence, Croatia was among countries that spoke in support of Pristina.

On January 4 2010, Serbia filed papers at the International Court of Justice in The Hague levelling allegations of genocide against Croatia during the conflict that followed the breakup of the former Yugoslavia. Ten years earlier, Croatia filed the equivalent court action against Serbia.

Interviewed by Croatian Radio-Television (HRT) on January 6, Mesic’s foreign policy adviser Tomislav Jakic was asked why the final round of visits to neighbouring countries at the close of Mesic’s term of office did not include Serbia.

Jakic said that there had been an agreement for Serbian president Boris Tadic to visit Croatia in 2009, and for Mesic to follow up with a reciprocal visit, but Tadic had cancelled three visits to Zagreb.

Mesic’s visit to Kosovo will include meetings with president Fatmir Sejdiu, who will confer on Mesic one of Kosovo’s highest decorations, prime minister Hashim Thaci, and the speaker of the Kosovo assembly Jakup Krasniqi. Mesic is scheduled to address the assembly.

Mesic will be made an honorary citizen of Pristina.

"These are just last twitches of a dying man. Mesic will be gone soon but what he is leaving for the next guy is not good. The next president will have to work hard to undo all the stuff this one did." Peggy

What makes you so sure that the next man will undo all that Mesic has done?? You got to keep in mind Mesic served 2 full 5 year terms. He must have been pretty popular [...]

Read the full comment to be able to pull such a streak, therefore if the guy succeeding him better follow a similar path if he or she wishes to have the same run as Mesic.
===========================

Mesic's chair is not cold yet and your new president is already talking about dropping the law suit.

A real slap in the face for Mesic, don't you think?

Like I said, if all Croatians thought like you, Croatia would be stuck in the past unable to move forward.

Exactly right Ludvig.
They are discrediting themselves.
No need for anyone else to say a word.

Hey you animal you,
No one could make the Serbian case better than you. One has only to imagine living next to you, dealing with your kind, on the daily bases. You cannot say that anything justifies your animal behavior. By the way, I have nothing to do with your problem, whatever that may be and I did not treat you like animal, that you are.

You are however, making anyone who reads your insane comments sick already.

Can't you talk like a normal human being? Do you have to spew so much venom all the time?

Visar, I would've thought that Croatians have learned something in the last ten years.
Behave like civilised people who don't let child killers out of rison.
This is not the European way and if you think that this will make Croatia look good and give her credit to enter EU then think again.
I am not saying that this alone will stop the process but keep this up, elect people like Mesic again and watch your chances slipping.

Actually Koinos, I would not say that all Crotians are ustasa war criminals. What I will say is that those crominals who murder children should not be pardoned like Mesic just did.

By pardoning these war criminals he is pardoning the crime itself. Is this what you think a democratic country does nowdays and still belongs in the civilised world?

What's wrong with Croatia ? It is (now) a democratic country with EU accession aspirations (as long as it keeps the Slovenes sweet !), and has every right to develop its own bilateral relations amongst neighbouring countries.

But there is no pleasing Peggy, so she will probably respond with a counterblast saying that all Croatians are Ustashe war criminals !

Just to bring into your attention one more thing,

As long as it was President Tito (Croatian), SFRY was a prosperous country. With Milosevic (Serbian), SFRY "melt down".

Does it need further comments???

Mesic just pardoned Croatins who were found guilty of murdering Serbs and were sent to jail.

A Nazi will not let another Nazi rot in jail. What's the problem with murdering Serbs? Nothing as far as Mesic is concerned. He pardons the killers.

Now if Serbia pardoned the Serbs in jail for the same thing there would be outrage here.

Hypocrites, all of you Albanians and Croats.

If Belgrade and the majority of Serbs are 'chilled' from the visit by the outgoing president of Croatia then I hope they don't freeze altogether when other prominent state leaders visit the state.
