Record-high temperatures for the season were recorded throughout Bulgaria on January 1 2010, with the average temperatures ranging between 11 degrees and 16 degrees Celsius, Bulgarian news agency BTA said, quoting the meteorology institute with the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

In Sofia, the high was 17.3 degrees Celsius, shattering the old record of 16 degrees Celsius for the date, set in 1971. In Bourgas and Varna, the highs were 20.1 degrees Celsius and 18.8 degrees Celsius, respectively.

In Veliko Turnovo, the temperatures reached 22.4 degrees Celsius.

The weather will change drastically at the weekend, with average temperatures falling to between six and 11 degrees Celsius on January 2 and further down on January 3, when snow is expected to fall throughout the country. In northern Bulgaria, the snowfalls will be accompanied by strong winds.
