Heating prices will increase five per cent from January 2010, Angel Semerdjiev, head of the State Energy and Water Regulatory Commission (SEWRC), told private national bTV channel on December 30 2009.

The price of heating in Sofia, where the heating utility is controlled by the state, will be increased by 4.89 per cent, he said.

"The five per cent hike is the maximum increase that can be charged by private heating utilities and it is up to them to decide if they want to apply it," he said.

According to the SEWRC calculation, the five per cent increase will add between three and four leva to the monthly heating bill of an average 70 sq m apartment, depending on its energy efficiency.
